Cavaliers refute having interest in Pitino as coach

The Cavs have denied a report saying they are interested in Rick Pitino for the head-coaching position.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have denied having interest in Rick Pitino for their vacant head-coaching position.

A source denied the validity to Amico Hoops of a report by veteran NBA writer Peter Vecsey of Patreon on Saturday night that said Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert had spoken to Pitino about the position.

“We are, respectfully, not interested in him at all. No conversations with him by Dan (Gilbert) or anyone else,” the source said.

Poll: Should Cavaliers hire Pitino as head coach?

The Cavaliers are looking for a new coach after having parted ways with Larry Drew the day after the regular season concluded.

The team began its extensive search for Drew’s replacement this past week, speaking with Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley and Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard.

  1. Thank goodness. Pitino is too old- 6 years older than Drew. He knows nothing about the modern NBA or how to manage NBA player’s egos. Altman said they were looking for someone who can grow along with this team, and who can be there long-term, so they can finally develop some continuity. Cavs are the perfect job for a younger up-and comer. Maybe Pitino put this story out himself, to try and drum up interest from other teams…
