Nuggets Notes: Hopes for season a mile high

Jamal Murray and the Nuggets have their sights set on a playoff spot this season.

How good can the Denver Nuggets be this year?

“We can be a contender, for sure,” Nuggets big man Darrell Arthur told The Denver Post. “Right up there with Golden State.”

Keep in mind that Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and the Warriors lost just one postseason game on their way to a second championship in three seasons.

And the Nuggets? Well, they didn’t make the playoffs.

But with the likes of talented youngsters such as center Nikola Jokic and guards Gary Harris and Jamal Murray, the Nuggets truly believe they are a team on the rise.

Oh, there’s also that Paul Millsap guy, a veteran do-it-all forward who arrives from the Atlanta Hawks.

“We believe in Paul Millsap and Nikola Jokic, we have the best passing, playmaiking frontcourt in the NBA,” third-year Nuggets coach Mike Malone told NBA TV. “The great thing about Paul is he’s going to bring us playoff experience, a go-to player and a guy has played in a lot of big games.”

The Nuggets finished 40-42 last season, just one spot out of the final playoff spot, which instead went to the Portland Trail Blazers. So they were right there. Now, they are convinced there are plenty of reasons for hope.

“We struggled winning close games last year, and that’s the result of a lot of youth,” Malone said. “Guys need to learn how to win. Once they do that, it becomes a habit. Hopefully our guys can take a big step forward in that area this year.”
