Payton II signing two-way deal with Lakers

Gary Payton II is signing a two-way contract with the Lakers, according to a report.

The Los Angeles Lakers are signing guard Gary Payton II to a two-way contract, according to a report by Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

The son of Hall of Famer Gary Payton, himself a former Laker, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Payton II will be on hand with the Lakers when they take on the Grizzlies on Monday in Memphis.

The Oregon State University product was not selected in the 2016 NBA draft, signing a free-agent deal with the Houston Rockets.

Payton II has played 18 games over the course of the last two season seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks, for whom he made six starts in 12 games this season, averaging 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game.

The Bucks released him Dec. 17.

Besides being the son of a former Laker, Payton II has another connection with the team.

His father had a tremendous stretch playing for George Karl with the Seattle SuperSonics. Karl’s son, Coby, is the head coach of South Bay, the Laker’s G League affiliate, for whom Payton II could spend time as a two-way player.

The Lakers (15-27) are riding a four-game winning streak headed into Monday’s matchup with the Grizzlies (13-28).
