Only $50,000 of Okafor’s contract with Pelicans is guaranteed

Jahlil Okafor signed a two-year deal with New Orleans.

Just $50,000 of Jahlil Okafor‘s two-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans is guaranteed, Basketball Insiders writer Eric Pincus notes.

Okafor’s deal has a partial guarantee in the first year and a team option for year two.

Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2015 with the No. 3 overall pick, Okafor was traded to the Brooklyn Nets this past season. The big man appeared in 26 games with the Nets and averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 56.6 percent from the field in roughly 13 minutes a game.

Okafor’s best season in the NBA came during his rookie year with the Sixers. He posted 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

The Pelicans lost DeMarcus Cousins to the Golden State Warriors in free agency, so were in need of some frontcourt help. New Orleans also signed former Los Angeles Lakers forward Julius Randle.
