X announces closure of operations in Brazil

Social media platform X said on Saturday it would shut down its operations in Brazil “with immediate effect” due to “censorship orders” issued by Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes.

X, owned by Elon Musk, alleges that Moraes secretly threatened one of the company's legal representatives with arrest if it did not comply with court orders to remove certain content from its platform.

The social media giant posted images of a document purportedly signed by Moraes that stipulates a daily fine of 20,000 reais ($3,653).

He also issued a decree to arrest X's representative, Rachel Nova Conceição, if the platform did not fully comply with Moraes' orders.

“In order to protect the safety of our employees, we have made the decision to close our operations in Brazil, effective immediately,” X said.

Brazil's Supreme Court orders X to remove certain content

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court, where Moraes sits, told Reuters it would not rule on the matter.

The platform reported on Saturday that Service X remains available to Brazilians.

Earlier this year, Moraes X ordered certain accounts to be blocked, as he investigated so-called “digital militias” accused of spreading fake news.

Moraes opened an investigation earlier this year against the billionaire after Musk said he would reactivate accounts on X that a judge had ordered blocked.
